In anticipation of this year's San Diego Comic Con, SciFi Squad and Horror Squad have launched the ultimate fan polls, asking you readers to vote not only for the best films of all time in their respective genre, but also on favorite characters, female heroines, films from the past year and so on. We're going to ask you to make some tough choices here, but that's the point -- how else are we to determine the best of the best? So check out our Ultimate Sci-Fi Fan Poll below and vote away! When you're done, head on over to Horror Squad and do the same. We'll announce the winners just in time for this year's Comic Con.

If you asked best movie, not best franchise, I'd have probably said Alien, but since it was franchise, I had to go with Star Wars. Can't say I liked any of the Aliens after the second one.

Aliens 2 scariest and wildest. Return of the Jedi best S.W. But later all the disney characters ruined the franchise. Star trek The capt kirk movies where the best ones excluding #1 and the one with spocks brother. New Kirk Is great too. Forbidden Planet still fantastic.

I agree about return of the jedi, it is my favorite, too. people get stuck on the ewoks being too cutesy or whatever. but if you get past that, the variety of scenes, action, plot resolutions, and landscapes make it very beautiful and interesting.

The original Star Wars was great. The sequels/prequels just went down hill. Star Trek however was pretty good all the time. I liked all the versions too.

Don't forget Stargate franchise. Long running and is still in syndication, along with spinoffs. Movies went straight to video but were enjoyable.

What makes this the "Ultimate" poll, exactly? Looks like any other Sci-Fi Poll to me, and the topic, "Star Trek vs. Star Wars" has certainly been done to death. So, what's ultimate about it?

Having watched and read sci-fi since the early 1960's, I will say that todays movies have incredible special effects that make the stories more believable. But the stories themselves don't have half the imagination as films that could'nt rely on special effects to amaze the viewer. But ideas are what counts in sci-fi, since the days of Jules Verne, what ever man has thought of, has come to fruition. Beam me up.

What about Firefly / Serenity? Don't get me wrong, I love Star Trek, Star Wars, Aliens, Predator (especially the ones with Arny and Danny) I really love Star Gate, but Firefly/Serenity are REAL. No perfect world, no super weapons, just plain folk trying to make a living which just happens to be in outer space.
