I was recently inspired by friends and readers to put together a Top 100 Horror Film list, and I had a lot of fun doing it. You can see it right here at Horror Squad. So as soon as the dust cleared on that one, the obsessive-compulsive movie freak that controls my brain spoke up and said "Hey, dummy. Do one for science fiction now!" Actually, that may have been Erik Davis saying that. Either way, here's the list.Ah, and I feel I should preface it with the same words I used for the Horror 100: "Call 'em my "favorites" (although I'm sure I left some out) or call 'em "required viewing" for an aspiring

I think A Trip to the Moon really deserves to be on there. It was such a pioneer in sooo many ways, nevermind that it's a short and not a feature.
And though no one ever includes it, The Man From Earth deserves to be on any must-see list of science fiction films.

I would add "Seconds"--but maybe not exactly Scifi.

SECONDS is an absolute must. Code 46 should be on that list too.
And please: 28 Weeks Later... is waay better than 28 Days Later... Time will show this is fact!
Alphabetical order shows that you are not willing to face the wrath of the internets.

Some great picks. But what about Primer? Probably the most awesome time travel movie ever.

Did this list seriously just put Robocop before Star Wars? and TRON? and Terminator?
And what is the Truman Show doing on this list at all? Great flick, but it ain't sci-fi.
Erik Davisat 8-26-2009
It's in alphabetical order. He's not ranking them.
garlickat 8-27-2009
I was wondering the exact same thing, because in the statement above it says "I cared enough to see all the flicks (and hundreds more) and then rank 'em." which to me says they're ranked.
Only after your comment, Erik, did I realize it was alphabetical. Makes a lot more sense now.

What about Sleep Dealer, Timecrimes, Primer, Open your eyes, the last starfighter, Dune, Firestarter...
hpresat 8-27-2009
Not a complaint or gripe, just a small correction.
Star Wars was released in 1977 not 1976

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Brazil, Enemy Mine, Outland are the only 3 movies on this list I haven't seen. I think I would have put Dune or Event Horizon over say The Stepford Wives or Solaris (2002)... otherwise great list!

So... no Fifth Element? C'monnnn!

Thanks for helping me update my Netflix list...
Some others worth mentioning:
Being John Malkovich, V for Vendetta, The Fountain, Waterworld, Judge Dredd
and no love for The Happening? That movie was classic

OK, I know we're not nominating for Academy Awards, but for movies we really like, and in that regard I have to list Robinson Crusoe on Mars.

Where's "The Invisible Man"?

Jurassic Park was in 1993. My son was born the day it opened so I couldn't go...

I saw Invaders from Mars in 1956 - was 12. I've still not recovered from that one.

Dig the list, Scott. And love the range and crossover films. Guess some people forget to read the article title: "Weinberg's Top 100". Not joe-schmoe commenter's top 100. Would I wanna see This Island Earth on the list? Sure. On my list. But I can't argue with yours. Glad you put this up! Another bookmark for further reference.

I really think thx1138 shouldn't be on that list. I recognize its historical importance, but I don't think it is good enough to be in a top 100.
As for a movie that should be in the list but is not, I'd go with Pitch Black.
