Bryan Singer

Latino Review
got the scoop that David Goyer (Batman Begins, The Unborn) is rumored to be hard at work with producer Christopher Nolan, hashing out the screenplay to Warner Brothers' planned Superman relaunch, supposedly titled Superman: The Man of Steel. This is the Superman version of Batman Begins, essentially -- not that it's an origin story, but in the way that it's completely disconnected from previous Superman incarnations. That means no Brandon Routh and no slavish quasi-sequel to the 1970's films.

There's little in the way of story details just yet, but Latino Review does cite Brainiac and Lex Luthor as the villains. Hooray for Brainiac, but can we please skip Luthor for at least one installment of the series? No film has quite gotten the character right, and I'd rather see Supes face off with someone he can actually have physical action scenes with -- Parasite, Mongul, Bizarro, anyone but Lex Luthor.

A new Superman movie sounds like a really tough sell, and this is coming from a guy who actually liked Bryan Singer's homage to Richard Donner. I acknowledge that it wasn't the Superman movie than most fans wanted to see, but it still strikes me as odd that Superman would ever be in a position where he'd actually be hard to market. Once bitten, twice shy, I guess. I'm hopeful that Nolan and company can turn this image problem around. There's still a lot to love about the Man of Steel.

The revamped Battlestar Galactica series might have just wrapped up in March, but it's already getting a new big-screen re-telling. Sources told HitFix on Wednesday that Bryan Singer, the man behind the first few X-Men films and the love-it-or-hate-it Superman Returns, would produce and possibly direct Battlestar for the big screen. The news has since been confirmed by Universal, and Singer is definitely helming the space adventure.

So why am I commenting on speediness? THR says: "Insiders have said the feature is to be a complete reimagining and will stand separately." Reimagining a show that was super-popular and just ended this year is all sorts of ridiculous. Even if it's aiming to focus on the original show, that's still reimagining source material that was just reimagined to great success. That's more than enough "reimagination" for anyone.

Our good pal (and Cinematical writer) Kevin Kelly just passed along the hot-off-the-presses news that Bryan Singer will executive produce a new 2012-related TV show for the SyFy network. The untitled show will be a 6-hour limited series to be written by Michael Petroni (Chronicles of Narnia: The Dawn Treader, Masters of Science Fiction: The Awakening, Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys) and Michael Bond (Passengers) -- and it will follow a down-on-his-luck author/professor who goes on a National Treasure-like worldwide adventure trying to "uncover the mysteries surrounding the Mayan Calendar and the potential apocalypse it seems to have predicted centuries ago." It's sort of like The Da Vinci Code meets National Treasure meets 2012.

Singer exec produced the channel's 2005 miniseries The Triangle (which I did not watch), and with 2012 coming out this year in theaters and with the actual year approaching, now seems like the right time to exploit the ancient Mayan prophecy for all it's worth. On the show itself, Singer says, "I have always been fascinated by the various myths and conspiracy theories surrounding the Mayan Calendar. It's the most accurate calendar created by man, so accurate that many believe its origins may lie elsewhere. Regardless of what you believe, what is truly mysterious about this, is that a number of cultures and religions, including Hinduism, all point toward a period of great upheaval which happens to coincide with the final month and year marked by the calendar. Our story will explore whether we are truly alone in the universe, and other related mysteries, all of which are set against the backdrop of an incredibly exciting and fast-paced adventure."
