Just a quick casting update: Though he was rumored to be the frontrunner for the role (after the Jackie Earle Haley rumors went away), it was never officially confirmed. Well, D.C.'s CCO Geoff Johns announced via his Twitter that Mark Strong is indeed playing the villainous Sinestro (who may or may not a villain in this first Green Lantern movie). Most of you know Strong as the dude who played the villain in the recent Robert Downey Jr.-led Sherlock Holmes, and he's also playing the villain in Kick-Ass. What is it with this guy and villains, anyway? Kinda creepy ... maybe a little bit?

Johns said via Twitter: "Back from an amazing trip to Green Lantern town a.k.a. New Orleans. Ryan IS Hal. And Mark Strong is going to be a brilliant Sinestro." Sinestro is the quintessential villain, and the arch-nemesis of the Green Lantern Corps., however it's been reported that he may not become that arch-nemesis until either late in the first film or in the sequel, if one happens.

Last week's leaked Green Lantern concept art literally blew my socks off, which was especially remarkable seeing as how I was wearing shoes at the time. Ouch. Now, io9 has two new images they're presenting as legit leaked art from the 2011 Martin Campbell science-fiction superhero film.

Represented in these images are designs for the Guardians and Green Lantern's mentor-turned-nemesis Sinestro (an unfortunate name if his parents ever wanted him to grow up to be anything but evil). The Guardians are the otherworldly beings responsible for the Green Lantern Corps - the intergalactic police force which recruits Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) in the film. They're represented as arrogant and judgmental in the comics, but they're also responsible for who gets a power ring (the outlet for Green Lantern's power) and who doesn't. Sinestro is their star Lantern, until he gets power hungry and turns on the Corps. Mark Strong is said to be taking on the role of Sinestro in the film.

I was slightly disappointed with the initial casting of John Carter of Mars, but as Andrew Stanton keeps bringing the wonderful with every addition to the roster, I just have to trust him when it comes to his choice of Taylor Kitsch. But Stanton is sending more impressive talent to Mars, as according to The Hollywood Reporter, James Purefoy, Thomas Haden Church, and Mark Strong have joined the cast.

Purefoy will be playing Kantos Kan, the captain of the Xavarian, the grand flagship of Helium. Carter meets him in the prisons of Warhoon, and they're forced to battle in a gladitorial match. They become allies as only former gladiators can, and Kan assists him on his quest to save Mars / Barsoom. I found it difficult to picture the secondary characters in Princess of Mars, so I feel lame in saying "Purefoy is perfect as Kan!" but he'll fit the part of a seasoned naval captain. He'll be quite dashing, even. (Actually, I think Purefoy would have made a good Carter.)

Church will be playing Tal Hajus, who THR calls "a vicious Thark warrior who is determined to become king." In the books, he's a Jabba the Hut type who lusts after Princess Dejah Thoris, and is happily ensconced as a leader, so this might be one of the first big changes you'll see in the story. It would probably make things a lot more interesting to have Church play him as a capable bastard than a slobby wreck.
