I've been looking forward to Gareth Edwards' Monsters ever since I first heard about it earlier this year. The film made a pretty big splash at the SXSW Film Festival, and now there's news as to when the rest of us will finally get to see it for ourselves.

Monsters will play in New York and L.A. starting on October 29th of this year. The film is being released through Magnolia Pictures' genre division, Magnet. No word yet on whether it might play more markets after its debut, but Magnet is cool about getting these films out on VOD in short order (sometimes before their actual theatrical appearances..). So, even if you don't live in NYC or Los Angeles, don't fret -- you'll still be able to check this film out at some point.

Made with a five-man crew and two actors, for very little money (some reports have placed the budget as low as $15,000), Monsters could become this year's Paranormal Activity -- which is ironic, since a late October release date will put it in direct competition with that film's sequel.

The movie is centered on an American journalist (Scoot McNairy) tasked with finding his boss' daughter (Whitney Able) and escorting her through an infected zone of Mexico to the US border. This particular stretch of land is quarantined because NASA discovered the existence of alien life in our solar system and sent a probe to take samples -- but the probe crashed over the region on its return and now extra-terrestrial lifeforms are flourishing there while the US and Mexican military try to contain it.

Here's a look at tonight's sci-fi TV:

chuck preview nbcChuck, "Chuck Versus the Honeymooners" Chuck is back after a three-week hiatus with the first of six new episodes. Last time we saw our boy, he was taking some time off after finally reuniting with Sarah. Tonight, Chuck and Sarah board a terror train with a deadly passenger, Basque terrorist Juan Diaz Arnaldo.

The series' previous episode, "Chuck Versus The Other Guy,' was written as a season finale before NBC ordered this new batch of eps. It's time to find out if these final six will be as good as the first thirteen. (8 p.m. ET on NBC)

lost dr. linus preview

Here's a look at tonight's sci-fi TV:

Lost, 'Dr. Linus' – We jump back to the sideways world and catch up with Ben, who's working in Los Angeles as a simple schoolteacher (or is he an evil schoolteacher?) alongside our old buddy Arzt. On the island, Ben is forced to face the consequences of his lies while Team Jacob learn about The Lockness Monster's attack on the temple. Tonight's ep is supposedly the start of the season's second act. While I'm not exactly sure what that means, I'm excited about discovering what kind of person Ben turns out to be when he's not surrounded by Dharma bums, ageless others, smoke monsters, and killer polar bears. (9 p.m. ET on ABC)

heroes brave new world

Here's a look at tonight's sci-fi TV:

Heroes, "Brave New Word" – The Heroes season finale could turn out to be a series finale thanks to tanking ratings (not to mention the show's dip in quality). Season four's final act sees Samuel taking revenge on humanity with the ultimate weapon ... a deaf girl's cello! The producers are promising a game-changing finale that will shock all 25 die-hard fans to the core. Oh, and Sylar officially becomes a good guy, again. (9 p.m. ET on NBC)

Chuck, "Chuck Versus The Mask" – It's team-up time as Morgan pairs with Elle to find out Chuck's secret, and Sarah and Shaw work together on a mission involving cute nerd couple to be (I hope) Chuck and Hannah. (8 p.m. ET on NBC)

fringe grey matters fox

Fringe, "Grey Matters" - Get ready for more gruesome mad lab science on Fringe as the team investigates a mental patient who ends up with an exposed brain after an impromptu surgery. While Mojo Jojo runs around, Olivia is drawn back into the dueling universes arc following a shape-shifter sighting and a visit from William Bell (Leonard Nimoy). With all of this distracting stuff going on, will anyone have time to save Walter from the evil brain doctor's clutches? We'll find out tonight. (10 p.m. ET on Fox)

sanctuary syfy season two

Last week's premiere episode of Syfy's Stargate Universe managed to attract more viewers than some network shows, including Fox's Dollhouse, to become the biggest Stargate franchise premiere in four years. The viewer and critical responses to the show were mixed, with some praising its darker look and direction and others calling it tedious and derivative. (We liked it. Thanks for asking.)

We're anticipating another Syfy premiere this week: The cable network welcomes back Amanda Tapping's Sanctuary for season two on Friday. Will the Sanctuary premiere follow Syfy's high-ratings trend set by Warehouse 13 and SGU?

Also this week, Paris Hilton skanks up Supernatural, FlashForward gets more cast members, and zombies attack Smallville! Click through for this week's TV picks and previews.

smallville dollhouse premieres

I really wish Smallville would air after Dollhouse on Friday nights this season. Then I could easily wipe away all of Joss Whedon's troubling philosophical questions about identity and death with a light dose of Superman silliness. (But I guess that's what DVRs are for.) New seasons of both shows premiere tonight, and we've got a few clips to tide you over until then. Don't forget to tune in, or program that DVR, and head back to SciFi Squad this weekend to discuss the premieres.

Season nine of Smallville kicks off at 8 p.m. on The CW with Clark donning the "S" shield on his chest (finally!), but growing distant from his old pals. The new season promises to edge Clark further into Superman territory than ever before. Along for the ride will be newcomers Callum Blue as Zod – the guy you're supposed to kneel before – and Brian Austin Green as Metallo.

Dollhouse returns at 9 p.m. on Fox with guest star Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Galactica). This season sees Echo becoming aware of her multiple personalities (as was hinted in the "lost" episode, "Epitaph One") and will feature some great new cast members and recurring players, including Summer Glau, Ray Wise and Angel star Alexis Denisof.
