star trek galaxy quest blu-ray farscape dvd

Looking for something good and geeky to watch? Here are this week's notable DVD and Blu-ray releases:

Star Trek
(DVD & Blu-ray)
J.J. Abrams' great Star Trek flick did the impossible by rebooting and recharging the classic franchise for a new generation. It also pleased most OG Trekkers with its great performances, brisk storytelling, and callbacks to the original series. The DVD and Blu-ray discs are loaded with more bonus material than fans could ask for, and the HD film transfer looks amazing. Now the only problem is deciding where to buy the thing. Luckily, our own Erik Davis already posted about the 400 different retail promotional releases available at various stores, so I don't have to sort them all out here.

And while you're out deciding which set to pick up, you'll probably run into two more brand new Trek DVD releases, The Best of Star Trek: The Original Series (Vol. 2) and The Best of Star Trek: The Next Generation (Vol. 2). And if that isn't enough for you ....

Galaxy Quest (Blu-ray)
This clever and satisfying Trek spoof finally arrives on Blu-ray with some tempting special features (and an even more tempting $20 price tag at some online retailers).

More new DVD releases after the jump.

dollhouse season two promo

- Fox has released new promo images for the second season of Dollhouse featuring solo shots of all the cast members, including a fresh-faced Victor (Enver Gjokaj), who was last seen getting his mug sliced up by Alpha last season. These come just days after a batch of very, very tiny (and spoilery) promo pics for the season premiere showed up online. Dollhouse returns to Fox on Sept. 25.

- A&E Home Video has tons of special features planned for its upcoming Farscape DVD releases. The sets are due November 17. Anyone think huge DVD sales could lead to a new season of Farscape, or a jump to the big screen, ala Serenity? (Or at least a Blu-ray release?)

- Damn, those Smallville folks give good trailer. Head after the jump for the first official look at season nine -- and Clark Kent's Matrix-style super suit. Smallville premieres Sept. 25 on The CW.

wathmen director's cut blu-ray cover art

Welcome to Captain's Log -- your (semi) daily round-up of sci-fi randomness from around the web. Here's what's happening today:

- AICN has a list of the added/reworked scenes from Zack Snyder's Watchmen Director's Cut. It features a lot more dialogue and violence than the theatrical version. Surprise!

- Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosarus earned $13.8 million Wednesday, taking the top box office spot from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Maybe next time Michael Bay will deliver the Dinobots instead of close-ups of John Turturro's ass and giant Decepticon balls.

- You know the Beyond Thunderdome-esque get-up Mickey Rourke is wearing in that Iron Man 2 set photo? Turns out that's probably only for an early scene. Rourke will be outfitted in more imposing Crimson Dynamo/Whiplash armor later on in the movie.

More sci-fi awesomeness after the jump.
