syfy

I haven't seen Caprica yet, but word-of-mouth has been getting better since the debut of the pilot episode. Battlestar Galactica was a weekly religious event for me, so I'm not sure why I didn't jump into Caprica from the start, but I'm glad to hear it's good -- means I have something to look forward to as the seasons start hitting DVD.

Ratings have been getting better for the show as well, with strong demographics in the golden "young adult male" category that tthe advertisers love so much. The show is doing well enough that SyFy are pursuing Ronald D. Moore to build another spin-off around the Galactica universe, this one set in space like the original show.

Where could Battlestar Galactica go next? Do we want to see a show that centers around another ship in the fleet, taking place during the series' previous seasons? Do we want a spin-off about Cylon culture similar to the original movie The Plan? I vote for The Life and Times of Gaius Baltar, a weekly prequel series that follows James Callis' complicated villain character through his early life of arrogance and deceit (but since that one doesn't take place in space, it won't be happening). What do you want to see in a new Galactica spin-off?

caprica imperfections syfy

Here's a look at tonight's sci-fi TV:

Caprica, 'The Imperfections of Memory' – Joseph tours the V-world in search of Tamara and gets lost in the ultraviolent New Cap City game. Zoe takes a break from her mission to fly a virtual Viper (that's right!) with the geeky Graystone Industries tech. I thank them for taking on the task, but I do not envy Syfy one iota in regards to making a Sharktopus movie. We're not talking Star Trek canon here, we're not talking about turning Starbuck from a guy to a girl; we're talking about the abominable, perversion of nature that is a shark combined with an octopus. If they don't get every detail of this holy grail of monster mashups correct, I am going to write a very strongly worded Tweet about it all.

First the debate was over how many mouths the God on Earth should have, but now that that is presumably settled, the network has moved onto deciding who should slay the mighty foe. I can only assume the search has been long and tireless, but it looks like they've finally settled on their hero of the 9pm Saturday hour and if you guessed it would be Eric Roberts, you are correct. You're also capable of reading, since I put it right up there in the title.

Snark aside, I'm glad they settled on Roberts over one of the lesser Baldwins (Sharks in Venice is still a sore subject for me). He's been in a string of straight-to-video projects lately, but my hatred for The Chaos Experiment is still not enough to make me forget about his recent roles in The Dark Knight, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and Phat Girlz (okay, so I can't turn off the snark when talking Syfy). Roberts will be playing the mad scientist who gives metaphorical (I assume) birth to the Sharktopus, which means he'll now be going head-to-head with Jeffrey Combs (for Hammerhead: Shark Frenzy) for the Best Character Actor Who Becomes a Victim of His Own Diabolical Plan to Genetically Engineer Sharks award I just invented.

caprica cylon there is another sky syfy

Here's a look at tonight's sci-fi TV:

Caprica, 'There Is Another Sky'
Caprica is quickly becoming one of the best and most provocative dramas on TV. It's too bad no one is watching. But those in the know won't want to miss tonight's ep that finds Daniel Graystone trying to save his company, sealing his planet's doom in the process with a big Cylon push. Elsewhere, Joseph Adama tries to reconnect with little Billy while Tamra's avatar explores the chaotic virtual world. (9 p.m. ET on Syfy)

smallville conspiracySmallville, 'Conspiracy'
– Oh, those nutty Kandorians! On tonight's ep, Zod and his crew of clones experiment on a human doctor, who later goes crazy, escapes, and kidnaps Lois (of course!) in an effort to prove that aliens are invading Earth. Yeah, Smallville's gotten pretty crazy this season. You should be watching. (8 p.m. ET on The CW)

What's that? You can't get enough of Roger Corman mixing sharks with something else? Well, guess what? DINOSHARK, that's what.

While our very own Peter Hall gets his underoos damp over the mere mention of the planned Sharktopus movie, I'm already moving on to bigger and better shark-monsters namely Dinoshark, the newest new film from SyFy and Roger Corman (and Dinocroc director Kevin O' Neill). Need a plot synopsis? It's half-shark, half-Tyrannosaurus Rex, half-awesome. Yes, it has three halves. Spoiler: People die.

Dinoshark premieres on SyFy, March 13. Set your DVRs. The only place to go from here is Octosaurus Rex (I'd also settle for Croctopus). Make this happen, Syfy.

(God bless you, Hollywood Reporter.)

What's in a name, anyway? Can you really ever know what you're getting yourself into when you flip the tube to Syfy for Mansquito, Frankenfish, or Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus? Oh, you can? Well congratulations, you are literate. So try this on for size: Sharktopus.

Yes, Sharktopus. Those mad geniuses at Syfy have stopped talking the talk and decided to walk the walk by manning up for the unprecedented fusion of terror that is a shark and an octopus all mushed up together into a cartilaginous abomination that swims against all that is good and pure in the world. Details are sparse at this point, but Roger Corman is definitely producing the killing machine for an unknown director and unknown cast of tasty morsels for the mighty Sharktopus to feed on.

The Director of Original Movies for Syfy, Karen O'Hara, had this to say on Twitter, "Just got off the phone with the legendary Roger Corman who's doing a new movie for us this year. Yes, it's the long-rumored SHARKTOPUS! Spent half am hour discussing what a sharktopus should look like, how many mouths it should have and how it should kill. That's my job!"

Sadly, that last comment is the sole thing that has me worried about the production at this point. Half an hour? Really? We all know He requires only two and a half mouths*, why even bother talking about it at all?

*The half is so he can laugh the Sharktopus laugh whilst He devours you.

smallville absolute justice dr. fate stargirl

Here's a look at tonight's sci-fi TV:

Smallville, "Absolute justice" Smallville channels Watchmen as Clark and Chloe try to solve the murder of a former superhero. The case leads them straight to DC Comics' legendary Justice Society in tonight's much-anticipated spandex-heavy TV movie event. Comic scribe Geoff Johns, who penned last season's fan favorite "Legion" episode, is behind tonight's two-parter featuring JSA members Hawmkan, Star Girl and Dr. Fate. Stargate's Michael Shanks, who straps on the wings to portray Hawkman, says "Absolute Justice" features "an appearance by nearly every single member of the Justice Society." (Still, don't expect Ryan Reynolds to show up wearing a power ring.) Phil Morris returns as Martian Manhunter and Pam Grier begins her multi-episode arc as Amanda "The Wall" Waller. (8 p.m. ET on the CW)

Caprica, "Reins of a Waterfall" – Tonight's ep is all about the fallout from Amanda Graystone's bizarre confession about Zoe being involved in the terrorist bombing. The Graystones go into damage control, and Amanda is interviewed by popular chat show host Baxter Sarno (the awesome Patton Oswalt) about her relationship with her daughter. Elsewhere, Joseph Adama orders a hit on the Graystone family. (9 p.m. ET on Syfy)

smallville absolute justice the cw

Welcome to TV Transmissions -- your (semi) daily sci-fi TV news briefing. Here's what's happening:

- Friday's latex-heavy Smallville "Absolute Justice" event looks like two hours of good geeky fun. Check out some brand new photos of Smallville's JSA in action, courtesy of Comic Continuum.

- Syfy is sticking with what works. After the ratings successes of Tin Man and the recent Alice miniseries, the cable net has ordered a batch of Saturday night movies that give classic fairy tales a contempo twist. Expect bizarro updates of Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel & Gretel, Beauty and the Beast and other favorites to start hitting the air late February.

- Rod Rodenberry, Gene Rodenberry's son, talks about updating his father's 1970s TV pilot The Questor Tapes for a modern audience. Being a fan of the original, I'm really looking forward to this update from Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Television. Joss Whedon pal Tim Minear is in talks to write and produce, but Rodenberry says not to expect a huge departure from the original.

- Fred Willard and Swoozie Kurtz are teaming to play a super spy couple on an upcoming episode of Chuck. The pair will guest star later this season.

Lost, Caprica, and Stargate news (plus more) after the jump.

fringe bishop revival fox

Here's a look at tonight's sci-fi TV:

Fringe, "The Bishop Revival" – The team is called in to investigate when a group of people mysteriously suffocate in a room full of air. Walter connects the incident to an experiment he was working on in Germany and later makes a shocking discovery involving the Bishop family and the Nazi regime. It's the Fringe team vs. Nazis, a showdown so potentially awesome that it makes up for the apparent lack of alternate dimension craziness in this episode. (9 p.m. ET on Fox)

The Vampire Diaries, "Unpleasantville"The Vampire Diaries reminds us that it's nothing more than a gothed-up teen soap with another hour of bubbly high school drama. Damon and Stefan fight over who gets to slow dance with Elena at the sock hop while a crazy new vampire crashes the party. Sounds like somebody spiked the punch! (8 p.m. ET on The CW)

Supernatural, "Swap Meet"Supernatural takes a cue from an '80s Fred Savage movie when a nerdy teen swaps bodies with Sam. (9 p.m. ET on The CW)

Archer, "Killing Utne" – Assassins target a UN intelligence chairman at Malory's dinner party. Also, Archer insults the help. (10 p.m. ET on FX)
