trailer

james marstersSpots for the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica have been popping up online for a week or so now. Most of the clips feature stars Eric Stoltz and Esai Morales at odds with each other, trying to keep their families together. The latest trailer finally gives us a peek at James Marsters as bad guy Barnabas Greeley.

He was one of Buffy's biggest bads, he manipulated Clark Kent as Brainiac on Smallville, and he single-handedly kicked off Torchwood's second season with a bang. Now, Mr. Marsters is set to enter the BSG universe as a complicated and dangerous terrorist leader ... who gets smacked around by girls half his size?

sanctuary syfy season two

Last week's premiere episode of Syfy's Stargate Universe managed to attract more viewers than some network shows, including Fox's Dollhouse, to become the biggest Stargate franchise premiere in four years. The viewer and critical responses to the show were mixed, with some praising its darker look and direction and others calling it tedious and derivative. (We liked it. Thanks for asking.)

We're anticipating another Syfy premiere this week: The cable network welcomes back Amanda Tapping's Sanctuary for season two on Friday. Will the Sanctuary premiere follow Syfy's high-ratings trend set by Warehouse 13 and SGU?

Also this week, Paris Hilton skanks up Supernatural, FlashForward gets more cast members, and zombies attack Smallville! Click through for this week's TV picks and previews.

smallville dollhouse premieres

I really wish Smallville would air after Dollhouse on Friday nights this season. Then I could easily wipe away all of Joss Whedon's troubling philosophical questions about identity and death with a light dose of Superman silliness. (But I guess that's what DVRs are for.) New seasons of both shows premiere tonight, and we've got a few clips to tide you over until then. Don't forget to tune in, or program that DVR, and head back to SciFi Squad this weekend to discuss the premieres.

Season nine of Smallville kicks off at 8 p.m. on The CW with Clark donning the "S" shield on his chest (finally!), but growing distant from his old pals. The new season promises to edge Clark further into Superman territory than ever before. Along for the ride will be newcomers Callum Blue as Zod – the guy you're supposed to kneel before – and Brian Austin Green as Metallo.

Dollhouse returns at 9 p.m. on Fox with guest star Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Galactica). This season sees Echo becoming aware of her multiple personalities (as was hinted in the "lost" episode, "Epitaph One") and will feature some great new cast members and recurring players, including Summer Glau, Ray Wise and Angel star Alexis Denisof.

Head after the jump for clips from both of tonight's premieres.

sanctuary season two cast syfyI wasn't a big fan of Sanctuary when it premiered last year on Syfy, but the new trailer for season two, embedded below, is making me look forward to the show's return on Oct. 9.

For the uninitiated, Sanctuary stars Amanda Tapping as Dr. Helen Magnus, a 157-year-old scientist devoted to helping supernatural creatures in need and kicking the ass of everyone else. Along for the ride are Tapping's sexy and dangerous daughter, Ashley (Emilie Ullerup), and newbie nerd Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne). The show also makes room for regular appearances by peculiar characters like Jack the Ripper, Nikola Tesla and Bigfoot.

Sanctuary started off as a Web series, produced by Tapping and Stargate vet Damian Kindler, which used advanced green screen techniques and CGI instead of traditional sets. The TV version is also filmed almost entirely using green screen, and the results can look rather sketchy at times. But judging by the trailer, it looks like the show's production department has polished up its technique for season two.

Check it out after the jump.

(What if Ghostbusters was made in 1954, and the 1980s Ghostbusters was simply a remake? What would the original look like? Well, some fan decided to give it a go and create an old black-and-white version, and the thing is pretty damn fun. Here's Jessica Barnes reporting from Cinematical)

Well, usually this works the other way around, but for once, a modern film is getting a classic update...at least when it comes to the trailer, anyway. This time, a dedicated fan by the name of whoiseyevan has made a trailer for the Ghostbusters movie that could have been...if it had been made in 1954. Taking over the roles made famous by Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, and Bill Murray are crooner Dean Martin as Dr. Ray Stantz (Aykroyd), Fred McMurray as Dr. Egon Spengler (Ramis), and who else but Bob Hope could fill Murray's coveralls as the smart-a**, Dr. Venkman?

All those classic 'busting' touches are there, which is probably what made this fan-trailer such a success. Then again, I might be biased because they managed to work in one of my favourite lines from the film in one of the title cards. So even if you aren't impressed with the result, you have to hand it to whoiseyevan and his knowledge of spook and spectre movies from the 40s and 50s. Heck, he's even got a line of dialogue with Martin calling himself a Ghostbuster! Now that's what I call a happy coincidence.

All of this Twilight/New Moon nonsense has really dulled my excitement for vampire movies. Vampires, especially teen vampires, are "hot" right now, and it seems like Hollywood is green-lighting every dull script or project that features a pair of fangs. But here comes the trailer for Daybreakers to shatter my comfortable pessimistic point of view.

There's a lot to like here. The film is set in the near future where most of the world's population have become vampires. Unfortunately, no more humans means no more blood, and the survival of the vampire race is at, er, stake. Enter somber vamp Ethan Hawke, who joins a group of crossbow wielding vamp slayers, including Willem Dafoe, to try to save the human race by blowing a bunch of sh*t up.
