Our nerdy little genre looks pretty legit today, as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made its 82nd annual Academy Award nominations. While you can see the full list of nods on Cinematical, I've taken the time to single out the science-fiction/fantasy films that are in the running at the upcoming Oscar ceremony. The winners will be announced on Sunday, March 2nd.

Some of them are the typical tech award nominations, which we've come to expect for spectacle movies, but there are also a lot of surprises this year, like the Original Screenplay nomination for Up or that the exemplary District 9 is in the running for Best Picture, beating out ill-received obvious Oscar-bait like Nine and Invictus.

You can see all of the sci-fi/fantasy Academy Award nominees after the jump.

wathmen director's cut blu-ray cover art

Welcome to Captain's Log -- your (semi) daily round-up of sci-fi randomness from around the web. Here's what's happening today:

- AICN has a list of the added/reworked scenes from Zack Snyder's Watchmen Director's Cut. It features a lot more dialogue and violence than the theatrical version. Surprise!

- Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosarus earned $13.8 million Wednesday, taking the top box office spot from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Maybe next time Michael Bay will deliver the Dinobots instead of close-ups of John Turturro's ass and giant Decepticon balls.

- You know the Beyond Thunderdome-esque get-up Mickey Rourke is wearing in that Iron Man 2 set photo? Turns out that's probably only for an early scene. Rourke will be outfitted in more imposing Crimson Dynamo/Whiplash armor later on in the movie.

More sci-fi awesomeness after the jump.

let the right one in remake

Welcome to Captain's Log -- your (semi) daily round-up of sci-fi randomness from around the web. Here's what's happening today:

- Cloverfield director Matt Reeves talks about adapting the Swedish vampire flick Let the Right One In for American audiences. He promises not to turn it into Twilight.

- What's Joseph Gordon-Levitt got to say about the G.I. Joe movie? "[It] has nothing to do with reality. It's really just about being an archetype." Excited yet?

- The Internets apparently chose Terminator's Summer Glau and Smallville's Kristin Kreuk as the top contendors to take over Angelina Jolie's job in the Tomb Raider franchise. I think the two geek-friendly stars should settle this with a televised cage match.

transformers 2 revenge of the fallen box office prime

Here's one thing the entire world can apparently agree on: We all love to watch giant robots blow things up while crushing the crap out of each other.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is already beating the competition overseas. The sequel to the 2007 hit premiered at the top of the international circuit during the weekend, earning about $20 million from 846 locations. (Terminator Salvation came in second overseas). Transformers 2 opens in the U.S. on Wednesday, and tickets for midnight premieres are reportedly starting to sell out all over the country.

In other Transformers news: Director Michael Bay has apparently gone crazy, or is pulling our leg, and is criticizing Paramount for not promoting the film enough. (I'm going with crazy.) Meanwhile, people (like CHUD's Deven Faraci) are criticizing Bay for using racial stereotypes in the film.

'Terminator Salvation' (Warner Bros.)Let's face it: without villains, heroes are boring. Without conflict, heroes sit around all day in their pajamas, drinking coffee, watching daytime TV, and waiting for someone to rescue. But enter an arch-enemy and wham!! Now the hero has a reason to get dressed and be valiant and virtuous. When it comes to science fiction movies, "a good old-fashioned baddie can transform even the most average science fiction movie into something quite special," says HecklerSpray, by way of introducing their list of the "Top 20 Sci-Fi Movie Villains."

Some good suspects are included: Jabba the Hut , the Alien Queen (Aliens), Agent Smith (The Matrix), and both Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800 in The Terminator and Robert Patrick as the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. (Check out the entire list at their site.) Naturally, that made me think of Terminator Salvation and its villain ... and then I realized I had no idea who the villain will be in McG's movie. We know Christian Bale as John Connor is good, we're not sure about Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright, and we know the mechanical monsters are bad -- but can a computer-generated creature really pull off the role of a villain?

Likewise, Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen appears content to have its giant mechanical warriors once again serve as the villains of the piece. Looking over the summer release schedule, the only traditional villain I see is John Travolta as a train robber in The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, but he could easily be overshadowed by Denzel Washington as the hero. Will CGI robots, rather than flesh and blood humans, really prove to be summer's top villains?
